High school teacher Randy McKinney said seniors Chelsea Adams, Justin Allen, Chelcie Swartwout and Amber Rodgers were students in his fall 2013 elective class History of Preble County.

During the course, McKinney encourages students to be creative and to follow their interests. The students found their focus drawn to the Van Ausdal-Donohoe House after the current building owners invited the class to tour the site.

The owners, Rick and Catherine Gade and their son, Ryan, have made a habit of taking dilapidated Eaton homes and restoring them to their former grandeur, McKinney said.

The Gades had found many things, particularly old newspapers from across the country and old funeral notices, in the house’s attic and allowed the history class to borrow them.

The students made it their goal to secure an Ohio Historical Society historic marker for the house and that goal was obtained when it was dedicated November 8, 2014.

The final container is at N 39 45.ABC W084 38.DEF
