Geocache Description:

Avonhead Park Cemetery - Background
Avonhead Park Cemetery was developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the concept of a new age cemetery using high-tech identification with minimal lawn and garden maintenance. The intention was a park environment with complete absence of memorials in the cemetery - ie no headstones nor plaques. A metal tag would be buried on the deceased's plot and their name, date details and ID number recorded only on the memorial wall by the records room; the largest one of 3 brown tent-like structures, other 2 are public toilets. A lighted table would show locations by number and a metal detector could be utilised to find the specific graves. A new meaning to tracking down ancestors.

Avonhead Park Cemetery opened in 1983 but this new idea of burial identification did not find favour with the community. Hence small ground level lawn cemetery plaques were later allowed. By 1993 additional areas were created to allow more upright memorials. The cemetery was extended in 2009 and within this extension is the Interment Site for the Victims of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake.

Memorial Garden for the Unfound Earthquake Victims
On the first anniversary, the memorial section was officially opened in Avonhead Park Cemetery, considered the most appropriate Council cemetery due to its proximity to the airport, available space, public transport and no liquefaction.

The centre piece of this Memorial Garden area is the dedication to the 4 unfound victims with same text repeated on 6 inscribed granite plaques in English, Filipino, Maori, Russian, Spanish and Braille.

The outer circle beyond the north and south entrances are ash beams available for use for all victims of the earthquake and their immediate families. In some cases families may choose to install a headstone or plaque even if the victim has been interred elsewhere.

The Geocache is not in the Memorial garden area.
As you enter from any of the 4 entrances, representing the 4 main Avenues of central Christchurch, to the centre, there is a stainless steel inscription at ground level. Use only this inscription to calculate for Final GZ by counting the number of letters for required word:

a = second word - 1
b = 9th word
c = whole word at East entrance [or you may use c = 6th word - 9th word ]
d = 7th word
e = first word
f = 4th word -3

Checksum is 32.

Final is S43 30.abc E172 32.def The container is a camo bison tube with logsheet only, so bring your own pen.
