The cache is located a short distance off the highway. Easily accessible with any vehicle and plenty of space to park. The exit road, peak, station and cache are named after John C. Fremont. John was a Major in the U.S. Army and an explorer of the American West in the 1840's.
The Fremont Station was located one mile east of the cache on Fremont Peak Road (RM 30). The station was located close to the midpoint of the Randsburg Railway tracks. Construction of The Randsburg Railway began in 1897 between Kramer and Johannesburg. The railway was constructed to meet the needs of mining operations in the Randsburg and Atolia areas. The railroad transported supplies, gold ore, and passengers. The tracks were operational until 1934 at which point they were removed. The north/south dirt road posted RM5155 is the old railbed. The station at Fremont served as a railroad crew camp for the Randsburg area. The concrete foundations of the bunkhouse which housed the railroad crews is all that remains of Fremont Station today. Construction of the bunkhouse was completed 100 years ago on November 19, 1914.
