HMHG 131 Night of The Living Cache Mystery Cache

Wendy: It breaks my heart to close them but the truth is that I just cant maintain them like I had intended.

The house covers a huge area and was an exciting piece of art that I and my friend and helper Jim poured our hearts into.

It was more fun building that little house with him than it was taking care of the real house. I sold the real house way over a year ago and have tried to maintain these caches over time but I have so many other things going on in my life that I just cant get to all of these.

It's not right to keep caches out there that I just cant keep in good shape so I am going to go ahead and close this series.

It has been a pleasure to own them and was a great honor to have an official geotrail the year they published. Thank you Groundspeak for always supporting and encouraging me to cache on !!!

A very special thank you to Doctor Teeth who poured so much into these caches along with us and thanks to all those who searched for them.

Sorry to those who wont get to visit and find them but so many of them are now missing and I keep getting messages that they need repaired and it's just bigger than I can commit time to now for a business that is no longer in operation.

Have a great caching adventure and hopefully in the future we will be able to bring you another Hatfield McCoy Geotrail MEGA adventure.

THIS CACHE IS MEANT TO BE DONE IN THE DARK. YOU CAN STILL FIND THE CACHE IF YOU DO IT DURING THE DAY BUT IT IS 100 PERCENT BUILT TO BE A NIGHT CACHE. YOU WILL FIND THE PARKING COORDINATES AND WHERE YOU BEGIN THE CACHE ONCE YOU WORK THE ABOVE PUZZLE AND EXIT YOUR CAR AND MAKE YOUR WAY INTO THE WOODED AREA TO YOUR RIGHT. ALL THE TRAIL IS MARKED BY TINY REFLECTIVE LIGHTS ON THE TREES. PLEASE BRING A FLASHLIGHT AS THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT A FLASHLIGHT AT NIGHT. WHEN YOU REACH THE FINAL LOCATION IT WILL BE MARKED WITH FOUR FIRE TACK REFLECTORS AND YOU WILL SIGN THE LOGBOOK AND THEN FOLLOW YOUR WAY BACK OUT BY FOLLOWING THE PATH MARKED WITH FOUR TACKS UNTIL YOU ARE BACK ON THE ROAD AND MAKE THE SHORT WALK BACK TO YOUR CAR. BECAUSE OF THE CONTENT ON THE PAGE AND AT THE SITE I WOULD SAY THIS ONE IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR KIDS. ITS SCARY ! SO READ ON AND COMPLETE THE CACHE AT YOUR OWN RISK........

In 1977 a tremendous flood covered this area in 50 feet of water. The raging torrent was so fierce that in many places it gouged out deep furrows in the earth.


Before the flood, this spot was one of the oldest graveyards in the region. When the torrent came through it washed away all the tombstones and cut a deep trench through the middle of the cemetery. The waters washed away some of the remains that were buried here.


There was a failed attempt to reconstruct the bodies that have been found over the years but the effort was abandoned and the numbered bones were reburied in a mass grave. Locals claim that at night the incomplete bodies that still lie beneath the ground, rise up and search for their missing limbs.

It is said that anyone touching a body part found here will be cursed and pursued throughout life by the restless spirits who haunt this place.
