Bushes and Fields - Strathfield Park Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

skyebomonkeytown: As the final is no longer accessible to the public due to redevelopment, I’ve seen it as a sign that it’s time for the series to go, opening up these wonderful green spaces to others for some new whiz bang hides! Do not come to look for the cache as I have removed it.

Geocache Description:

Bushes and Fields is a series I am creating showcasing some local HomeBUSH and StrathFIELD green spots, and the history associated.

Each cache holds information you will need to retain should you wish to find the final in this series, http://coord.info/GC5GVF0 (link will only work once published).

Strathfield Park is Strathfield’s most popular park providing a wide range of sporting and recreational facilities and opportunities.  Events such as Carols by Candlelight, Australia Day and Summer Programs such as Movies in the Park are held in Strathfield Park.

Strathfield Park is the oldest public park in the Municipality and is ideal for large community functions. The park is also popular due to its children's playground facilities situated within close proximity to seating and BBQ areas.  An Equal Access Playground (located on the Chalmers Road side) provides recreation opportunities for children with disabilities.

The layout is such that it offers the visitor a unique and diverse number of recreational opportunities, from structured sport to more private areas ideal for family picnics.

Strathfield Park was the first public park in Strathfield.  In the late 19th century, the site was originally a private golf course.  The land was publicly acquired in the early 1900s by the NSW Government.  Strathfield Park was dedicated on 11 February 1914 by the NSW Government, following a ballot of local residents to select the site.  Strathfield was adopted as the name of the Municipality in 1885, taken from John Hardy’s home ‘Strathfield’. For a time during WWII, the Australian Army requisitioned Strathfield Park and it was used as an army camp.  Strathfield Park was extensively renovated in the mid-1980’s. (Reference: Jones, C, Parks, Reserves & Memorials of Strathfield, 2004).

You are looking for a micro - too small for swaps and you will need to bring your own writing implement. The park is bordered on two sides by Chalmers Rd and Homebush Rd, both with (free) on-street parking. It is accessible at all times (there are residences nearby so appropriate stealth is recommended, as always).

Congratulations Lonely_Rooster on FTF within an hour of publishing. Well done!
