Geocache Description:

This cache takes you to a nice picnic area in Kaitoke Regional Park and shows you how to recognise one of New Zealand’s distinctive native trees. It is the second in a series of caches situated close to native trees. There is a sheltered picnic area, a toilet block and parking very close to GZ.

Rewarewa

Common name: New Zealand honeysuckle

Botanical name: Knightia excelsa

The rewarewa is a tall and distinctive upright tree that grows up to 30 metres tall, with a trunk up to 1 metre across. The leaves are long (10 - 15 cms) and have toothed margins. Leaves on juvenile trees are serrated as well, but are twice as long and narrower than the adult leaves.

Flowers are borne in dense clusters and are long, reddish brown and honeysuckle-like, hence the common name. They are borne high up in the tree and give off an objectionable smell.

It grows from sea level to 850 metres and is found throughout the North Island and also in the Marlborough Sounds.

The tree at GZ rises above the surrounding trees in typical fashion.

The cache

The cache is a 150 ml yellow M&M container and at time of placement contained a log sheet only. Please cover carefully with leaf litter after signing the log so that it won’t get muggled.
