In 1648, Robert Williams bought nine square miles of land from Pugnipan, chief of the Matinecock tribe. He paid Pugnipan in Trading Cloth. Valentine Hicks, former president of the Long Island Railroad bought land in this village in 1834 and turned it into a railroad station stop in 1837. The station became a depot for produce, particularly cucumbers for a famous condiment companies plant. After a blight destroyed the cucumber crops, the farmers grew potatoes instead.
Hicksville turned into a bustling New York City suburb in the building boom following World War II. Sportsmen came to Hicksville by train and stayed at the Grand Central Hotel (on the corner of E. Barclay and Broadway), hired horse and buggies to travel to Islip or Babylon to do some fishing. In front of the Grand Central Hotel, they could also buy tickets for the stagecoach to travel to all parts of Long Island to hunt or fish.
Directions: Look for the garbage dumping area for this drive-thru fast food joint on the north side of West John street between Newbridge Rd (Route 106) and North Broadway (Route 107) in beautiful downtown Hicksville.
Beware of employee muggles taking out the trash!
