The loch is actually on the golf course as an obstacle for the 2nd and 17th holes (and possibly others depending on how wayward the shots can be) so you won't be able to walk up to it. You can stand at the side of the path and quietly watch the golfers ignore this aptly named body of water.
The cache is located not far from the loch in the woods to the other side of the path. The main path does get very muddy in winter so wear decent footwear but there are a few little side paths going through the woods which can avoid much of the muddier sections. See waypoints for one of these. The woods are filled with wildlife and the walk is one my kids enjoy at any time of the year. There are log piles, fallen trees and various little side tracks. From the cache location you can see Braid Hills to the north and the Pentland Hills to the south.
