The country of Japan is a crescent-shaped island chain in eastern Asia, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Sea of Japan to the west. With a total area of about 145,883 square miles, the country is slightly smaller than the state of California, and consists of forty-seven prefectures.
