Geocache Description:

Web Post: 'Spire View'

Welcome to the first of my 'Web Post' letterbox caches placed around Chesterfield. After first seeing the original letterboxes around Dartmoor over 20 years ago I felt it was about time we introduced some around here. As a letterbox cache this contains a unique ink stamp so take a notebook or card to get your stamp.

The Letterbox Cache:

This letterbox is placed here with the permission of the local council, and is located discreetly just off the public footpath/bridleway that cuts down through the Tapton Park Golf Club. The location has been moved about 5 metres as the first cache was being left exposed behind the tree and was subsequently taken. This new location is slightly uphill and more hidden with ivy and foliage behind a stump. You will need to go behind the stump (from the path) to retrieve it. It is also then easier to hide behind the fir trees right below you, whilst you do the signing and stamping, out of view from walkers down the path. From this area there is a view in the distance (between the trees) of Chesterfield, with the Crooked Spire in the middle.

Be aware that there is no parking at either end of the path due to being narrow lanes so a bit of a walk is required. The closest wider public roads are Paxton Road towards the top of the path (with a short walk up Pettyclose Lane) or Piccadilly Road at the bottom side, walking up the bottom corner of Crow Lane then up past the golf club. There are no pavements on the lanes so take extra care with young children.

The letterbox cache container is 'postal' themed but hidden in a camouflaged bag just above an avenue of trees. It will require a bit of crouching and squatting to get behind the stump, which is underneath a bush, so take care of low branches sticking out. The outer bag should also be tied to the stump, to avoid animals running off with it hopefully. Inside the box is the usual logsheet and pencil, and a personalised stamp with ink pad to make a copy of it. These new ink pads are slightly smaller than the rubber stamp, so I would advise dabbing the stamp on the ink pad a few times at different positions. There is also a piece of black foam with the ink pad. I suggest using this under the paper to enable a bit of pressure under the whole stamp image, to avoid getting partial prints of it. There are a few blank cards to stamp if you forget to bring a book or paper, and some stickers too, so help yourself to one. There was also a special laminated FTF stamp souvenir for the first to find it, which was the first impression made with the original stamp. Well done to cats-eyes for their 1st class post on this cache. The contents fit in very snugly so no space for trackables or swag; please pack it back up carefully to fit it all in.
