LETTERS FROM HOME VAN BUREN COUNTY

Map of Michigan highlighting Van Buren County

Van Buren County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the population was 76,258.The county seat is Paw Paw. The county was founded in 1829 and organized in 1837.

Van Buren County is included in the Kalamazoo-Portage, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county was named for Martin Van Buren before he became president. He was U.S. Secretary of State and later Vice President under President Andrew Jackson, and thus Van Buren is one of Michigan's "Cabinet counties".

The Van Buren County Courthouse was built by Claire Allen, a prominent southern Michigan architect; its cornerstone was laid on September 2, 1901, after a vote to issue $35,000 in county bonds passed 1,355 to 1,097 on July 29, 1901

To find the geocache, you must follow these instructions:
1. From the posted coordinated travel 1405 ft on a true north azimuth of 177 degrees. There you should find your self at an intersection with a traffic control sign.
  • If the sign is a yield travel 5280 feet on a bearing of 270 degrees. If it is a stop sign travel 8417 feet on a true north azimuth of 90.6 degrees.
Once at this new location:
  • If that brings you to an intersection were the road cross at 90 degrees to each other, travel 5280 feet on an azimuth of 366 degrees to your final destination.
  • If one of the roads crosses at an angle then identify how large the bond issue was. Divide that number by 3.46. Let that number = X. Subtract 2.1 from X and let that equal Z. Travel East "Z" feet until you come to a well marked bicycle/walking trail on what was once a railroad grade. When you arrive there you will find a small post with two signs on them. One requires you to halt and the other forbids certain modes of transportation. Mark that sign as a waypoint.
2.Subtract 231 from the year the county was founded. Let that be Y. Travel Y feet on a true north azimuth of 141.2 degrees.
3. You will find what you are seeking hanging around in the area.

In each geocache container you will find a stamp. Use this stamp to complete your Map of MI (related webpage above)

Remember to bring your own ink pad. No ink pads will be placed in any of the geocache containers in this series. Please be considerate of your fellow cachers and use a wet wipe to clean the stamp before you put it back.

There are 83 caches in this series. That is a lot to maintain so feel free to help by bringing along a spare bag and maybe a towel to dry out anything that gets moisture in it. Please keep the containers hidden from muggles. Thanks for playing.
