Geocache Description:

The Devil Cache 1714 placed on the Devil's Peak is twinned with the Devil's Cache 3094 placed on the Devil's Saddle, a wonderful viewpoint over the Mediterranean sea. What does twinned means? Except that both overlook the place they live on, if you'll log both caches you're my guest for one Devil Beer, wherever I'll be.

The Devil's peak. Devil's Peak (魔鬼山) stands at 222 meters over Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery (to the east) and Yau Tong (to its west). The hill extends its ridge south to water in Lei Yue Mun and north to Chiu Keng Wan Shan. The area around the peak was garrisoned by the British Army or local pirates to control the passage of Lei Yue Mun, which is an important nautical passage in South China. The remains of a redoubt and batteries are still visible on the peak. The major parts of the military sites on Devil's Peak were built between 1900 and 1914. The four main clusters of military structures that remain are:

  • Devil's Peak Redoubt, which stands on the summit at a level of 222m. It was built in 1914.
  • A small site at 196m
  • Gough Battery - upper battery at 160m, was built in 1898 with 2 6-inch guns; one later replaced by 9.2-inch guns; guns removed in 1936 to Stanley Fort, the corresponding Cache was removed earlier, any Phoenix?
  • Pottinger Battery - lower battery at 81m, with 9.2-inch guns; guns removed in 1936 to Bokhara Battery, Cape D'Aguilar

A brief history of the cache

I placed this cache to give one contribution to this wonderful land for geocachers, so to give another shout-out to all the amazing HK players. The first idea of the old fisherman coming from another island (撒丁岛) was to place a cache around the Tseung Kwan O sea side walk, which I consider one of the most beautiful place for living in HK. But for some reason when I wake up in the morning I still search for some peak I still didn't visited and I reach it. And HK has so many places to discover.

About the cache

Reached the highest redoubt you will preside a wonderful viewpoint over almost everything. The Hong Kong Harbour of course, Kowloon Bay, and the TST side, the far Victoria Peak and the gorgeous Mount Parker, then all the harbour east entrance with Tung Lung Chau and the omnipresent little Sung Kong, the Lohas Park with the unmissable Junk Peak, and then the TSO Area with its Black Hill and the Majestic Kowloon Peak, on the Background.

The hiding place is a comfortable little shelter, repaired and with a place where to sit down if your tired.
