Emmanuel Church - Shelley
The Church has been a centre of worship since 1868. The church is a United Benefice with St. Paul's, Shepley in the Kirkburton Deanery of the Anglican Diocese of Wakefield. The foundation stone was laid by the 5th Earl of Dartmouth on 23rd August 1866 and the Church was dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Ripon on September 9th 1868.The building, as with many Victorian village churches, is of a simple design built of local stone and has been altered over the years to suit the worship patterns of the time.
Before 1868 local people had to walk to Kirkburton to go to church. The then Vicar of Kirkburton, Revd Collins, was keen that everyone should have a centre of worship in their own village. Much hard work was done to raise the money, including hundreds of letters written by Mrs Collins, and the Earl of Dartmouth gave the land. There was a great celebration in 1868 when the villagers finally had their own church.
