Although coal can be found all over Australia, the majority comes from the eastern states, of Queensland, New south Wales, and Victoria
Coal is a combustable rock, of organic origin, which is mainly carbon, and is formed by accumulated vegetable matter, and a small amount of inorganic matter, that has been altered by decay, and various amounts of heat and pressure during a course of millions of years.
Coal comes in different colours, with black coal having a higher energy, and lower moisture content than that of brown coal.
Interlayered with thin layers of shale, siltstone, or sandstone, coal is found in seams, or beds, ranging anywhere from less than a millimeter, to many millimeters thick, making open cut mines a preferred way of extracting it from the ground, rather than trying to follow the seam in a tunnel. There is no public access to either, as they are considered to be extremely dangerous places
After the coal is extracted from the ground, it is crushed and screened, and often then washed by immersing it in a liquid of high specific gravity, in which the coal floats, while the other heavier minerals sink and are then discarded.
