Geocache Description:

This cache is for the birds!

Welcome to the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Reserve. Stop #20 along the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail.

You are searching for a well hidden bottle cap cache container with a log only, so BYOP.

This cache is located at the trail-head of a 1/2 mile round trip, easy hike through the bottom lands and to an observation platform viewing Weeks Bay. Here you can watch or listen for Brown Pelican, Clapper Rail, Laughing Gull, Royal Tern, and Marsh Wren. At dusk, this is also a regular place to find Great Horned Owl. If you decide to take this hike in the warmer months, be sure to wear insect repellent to ward off yellow flies and mosquitoes. There are 2 other caches along this trail, not to mention an amazing view of Weeks Bay.

The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail is a birder's paradise. Our sun-drenched coast is a popular resort area for a variety of feathered visitors and year-round residents.

The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail (ACBT) describes the birding spots most frequented by Alabama birders. This trail was developed during the late 1990s and officially opened soon afterward to offer bird enthusiasts an opportunity to view and enjoy a high diversity of bird species representative of Alabama’s Gulf Coast and to promote birding through tourism in the region.

The ACBT features six birding loops in Baldwin and Mobile counties totaling over 200 miles. Each loop covers different ecological regions representative of the northern Gulf Coast and enables birders to experience different assemblages of bird species within each region. Since its opening, the ACBT has been a very popular birding attraction and in 2003 received the Alabama Tourism Partnership Award for its outstanding contributions to the state travel industry.

The trail spans two counties, and is enhanced by directional and interpretive signage, offering birding enthusiasts endless opportunities for avian appreciation. We hope you enjoy what this great region has to offer.

Please be sure to visit:

Weeks Bay National Estuarine Reserve. The interpretive center is only a short distance from the highway and provides restrooms, bird cards and other material.
