Die Kamele, die jeden Tag Touristen durch einen kleinen Teil der ansonsten für Menschen gesperrten Vulkanlandschaft am Timanfaya tragen, werden abends hierher zurückgeführt (siehe Cache GC 5HNMY - "Camellos di Uga 1") und verbringen die Nacht in ihren Gehegen.  Beim Herkommen ist das erste Gebäude auf der linken Seite ein Gehege mit Gittertor und Maschendrahtzaun.  Stellt man sich dort hin, werden fast immer einige die Tiere von Neugier geplagt und wollen sich die merkwürdigen Zweibeiner ganz aus der Nähe besehen.  Dann kommen sie ans Gitter und man kann sie nach Herzenslust kratzen.  Ebenso geht es direkt beim Cache, nur dass hier eine Mauer steht.  Aber es liegen genug Steine und Trümmer herum, auf die man steigen und über die Mauer hinweg Kommunikation mit den anderen Kamelen (ahem ...!) pflegen kann.  Das geht sehr schön, indem man die rauhen Rufe der Tiere möglichst laut nachahmt. 

Sie erkennen dann sofort die Verwandtschaft (ahem ... !) und kommen, um sie zu begrüßen.

Achtet mal darauf, wie Kamele kauen.  Sie schieben den Unterkiefer einmal nach rechts, einmal halten sie ihn in der Mitte, einmal nach links -- immer in derselben Reihenfolge.

Tatsächlich sind die "Kamele" allerdings Dromedare, zu erkennen an nur einem Höcker.  Echte Kamele haben davon zwei.  Aber überall auf Lanzarote werden diese Langbeiner mit der großen Schuhnummer als "Camellos" bezeichnet, deshalb halte auch ich mich daran.   Diese Tiere sind Nachkommen der im 19. Jahrh. als Last- und Reittiere importierten marokkanischen Dromedare, die hier in Uga zwischen Ziegen, Kühen, Geflügel und ein paar Hunden gezüchtet werden.

(see GC 5HNMY - "Camellos di Uga 1")   Here they spend the night in their corrals.  The first building you'll see on the left is a meshwire enclosure with a paled gate .  Go there, lean against the gate and some of the animals will become curious to see the queer two-legged creature from close-up.  They will come there – a good opportunity for you to scratch them to your heart’s content.   You can do likewise directly at the cache.   There are stone and debris enough lying around to step on and have a look over the wall in order to have cultivated conversation with the other camels (ha, ha ... !).  To do so imitate their rasp hollering.   Then they will recognize their kin at once (ha, ha ... !) and will come near to greet you.

Have a look at the way of the camels chewing.   Lower jaw to the rigt – lower jaw in the middle – lower jaw to the left. It's always the same procedure.

Actually the „camels“ are dromedaries identifiable by but a single hump.   Real camels have two of them.   But all over Lanzarote these four leggers with the big shoe size are called „camels“ so I will use that term, too.   These animals are descendents of dromdaries from Morocco that have been imported as pack and riding animals during 19th cty.   Here in Uga they are bred amongst goats, chicken and a couple of dogs.

 Please DO NOT FEED the animals !
