My first South Island cache placement, discovered whilst hunting, fishing and......caching
Whilst visiting this pristine lakeside location, and finding the existing caches, decided there needed to be one the D'Urville Hut. The cache is only a very short walk from the lakeside and accommodation. It can be a devil (D'Urville) of a job to get here, in excess of five hours tramping up the path to Sabine Hut, then another 2 1/2 hours to get here. Or, if you know someone with a boat....... The regular water taxi ferries people up and down the lake, but this comes at a cost!
The D'Urville Hut itself offers a DOC overnight bunk hut experience using a DOC ticket if staying overnight. Hut offers basic amenities including sink and kitchen area, 8 bunks sleeping capacity, and wonderful scenery!!
When placed this cache was placed in a watertight lolly tin from liferaft rations. Logbook was (blank) pages from the Sudoku book in the hut, and double bagged for waterproofing.
