Geocache Description:

Do you know that Maryland has flying squirrels? Marshy Point is home to the Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volansi).

Marshy Point Nature Center is open from 9-5 each day. The park itself is open from dawn to dusk.

I've never seen one but Marshy Point's Senior Naturalist told me that they are here in the park. Keep an eye out for them while you're here.

The southern flying squirrel is the smallest tree squirrel in Maryland, coming in at about 9-10 inches long and weighing 2-4 ounces. Southern flying squirrels are a grayish brown in color with a white belly and have a black ring around their large eyes. A furry fold of skin stretches from the wrist of each front leg to the ankle of each rear leg. This fold of skin is also known as a patagium and allows the squirrels to glide from tree to tree.

Southern flying squirrels are typically found in areas with pine and hardwood trees. Flying squirrels make their nests in tree cavities and rely on acorns and nuts as their main food sources.

Which brings me to the geocache that I placed here. It also likes to live in a similar habitat, specifically in a tree. This slightly larger than regular bison tube is extremely well hidden. Extremely. I'm not usually crafty with my hides because they never turn out like I hope but this one turned out well. One hint I'll give is that it's not on the ground. It's about 150 feet off of the white trail. Click here for a trail map. I took a 15 minute reading when first placing this, and then another a day later. Then, I stood out in the rain on Christmas Eve to get a final set of readings. The coords only shifted 0.001 Each time so I think these coords are good. Just set your GPSr down and let it settle for a minute or so when you get there.

This cache was named after a series of caches placed by -Black Swan, who worked here at Marshy Point. There was a nearby cache (Nature Series 1- Great Blue Heron) that was missing and she archived so I could place this one here. Thanks -Black Swan.
