Embekke - Temple trail

If you are in Kandy, and want to visit something off the beaten track, here is a good opportunity to do so, by visiting three temples and also find a geocache. It is a nice walk of 8,5 kilometers.

Near the small town Embekke you will find the Embekke Devale Temple. This temple dates from the 14th century. It is famous for the decorated wooden pillars. If you walk from the village to the temple, you will also pass the old remains of the Embekke Temple, since it was first located elsewhere. Here you will find the geocache.

You can reach Embekke by local bus from Kandy, it will take around one hour. After you stopped at the old remains of the Embekke Temple, and walked a bit further for the Embekke Devale Temple, you can continue a nice trail to see two more temples. The next temple is the Lankatilake Temple, on top of the hill. From here you will have a great view over the paddy fields. Continue the trail going north. After 3 kilometer you will reach the Gadaladeniya Temple, which is build on a rock outcrop.

Now you can walk 10 minutes going north to reach the Colombo-Kandy highway. Hop on one of the buses to get back to Kandy.
