Isla Mujeres is well known as a departure point for viewing whale sharks on their annual migration through the surrounding waters. This is normally from mid May to mid September, when these gentle giants can be viewed underwater in the Mexican Caribean surrounding the islands of Holbox, Contoy and Isla Mujeres. They can reach up to 40ft in length and can be individually identified from their unique spot patterns. There are many tour organisers that will take groups out for a fee.
Sadly not everyone gets to swim with them as the migration is seasonal, so there are 2 other ways to "see" them. The downtown area has many beautiful murals featuring whalesharks, painted by the Pangea Seed group as part of their sea wall project, and then there is this work of art that gives some indication of the physical size of the fish.-the biggest of all living fishes. One better- this has a geocache nearby, so do visit and enjoy.
The cache and statue are situated a short walk away from the ferry terminal, and can easily be reached within 10 minutes for most people. Many tourists to this wonderful little island make use of the golf carts which are on hire all over downtown, and these can be used to tour the length and breadth of the island. There are parking laybys in the vicinity of the cache, so it is all quite easily reachable
