C'est sans doute pour des raisons historiques et frontalières que la partie aval du vallon de Chastillon a ainsi été dénommée « Guerche ». En effet, de 1860 à 1947, le vallon de « Castiglione » (Chastillon depuis 1947) était situé en territoire italien et la frontière avec l'Italie passait alors par la partie amont de la Guerche. Pour les Français, c'est donc la Guerche (française) et non le Castiglione (italien) qui se jetait dans la Tinée. Et cette ancienne dénomination a perduré depuis - même si elle heurte la géographie - car elle relève sans doute de l'histoire.La station de ski d'Isola 2000 se trouve à 17 km du village d'Isola sur le territoire de la commune et est appelée ainsi en référence à son altitude.
