Recently, I couldn't help but notice that the Leawood sign has changed. I don't drive up and down Mississippi very often, and neighborhood entrance signs aren't something one typically looks at twice. But I noticed something was different, and found an old pic to confirm. Those of us who grew up in Little Rock might recall that the original Leawood sign was adorned with dramatic stone fruit baskets at either end, which were popular targets for tomfoolery.

I don't have the details of when the sign was changed, or how many times that the fruit baskets were stolen/recovered, but I would always have a laugh when I saw the sign with one fruit basket, instead of the usual two. The new design is sleeker and more minimal, with no embellishments; the one remaining fruit basket was unceremoniously shuffled to the back of the flowerbed with the base buried deeply. Deep enough to stop a motivated juvenile delinquent with a shovel? Maybe, maybe not.
I was told that the sign was rebuilt because a car crashed into it, and I imagine that the HOA realized that they needed to update the design. I'm sure that they realized that putting the fruit baskets back up was asking for it, and succumbed to the reality that they lacked the resources to ensure their safety. Leawood 0, vandals 1.
Congratulations to CanadaTeam and St. Rock for the FTF!
