Geocache Description:

The beach front along Albert Park is a lovely place to spend some time. The third of the Crawlspace series will find you getting refreshed again.

The Kerferd Road Pier, Albert Park, is of timber construction. It is a wide jetty formed of timber pylons supporting timber cross members. The current pier was constructed by the Public Works Department in 1887. Following suburban development at Albert Park in the 1870s, the foreshore along Beaconsfield Parade developed as a popular and fashionable seaside resort area in the 1880s. There had been a pier at this site from at least 1881. Swimming baths were built some 200 yardswest of the pier and were opened in the late 1800s. This coincided with the surge of popularity of sea-bathing, and a new understanding of the outdoors as a source of health and vitality. Hotels such as the Victoria Hotel and guest houses opened to cater for tourists. Day-trippers also crowded the South Melbourne / Albert Park beach at weekends and on public holidays. The pier became a fashionable place for promenading. The swimming enclosure has since been removed. This cache can be attempted year round, it contains a pencil and is large enough for small trackables. Please resecure and enjoy the sand, sun and surf.
