Geocache Description:

Paddle up a short side channel that feeds into the Loxahatchee River and you will find an old water control structure.  You will also find a cache nearby, but NOT on the structure itself.  The cache is intended to be reached via kayak/canoe, but if you don't mind a bushwhack of about 400 ft you can reach this from the blue-blazed Italian Farms Trail to the east.

I don't know if this structure dates back to the time of the original Lainhart and Masten Dams (1920s) or came later.  It clearly hasn't worked in a long time  The concrete portions seem pretty sturdy, but most of the metal is rusting away including the old water gate.  At high water levels you can paddle right up to it.  At lower levels the side channel gets too shallow for watercraft.

The cache is NOT on the water control structure; it is closer to the river.  Unless the water is exceptionally high you will need to get out of your kayak to retrieve the cache.  Careful with the mud.

Cache placed with permission from SFWMD who own and manager the river corridor between Riverbend Park and JDSP.

Thanks to Groupertoes for agreeing to move his Loxahatchee Lady (GC4RP9R) cache farther downstream so that I could place this cache.
