Historical Information:
In 1823 Ainsley Hall hired famed South Carolina architect Robert Mills to plan this house, one of few private residences he ever designed. Ainsley passed before the house was completed and his wife sold the house to the Presbyterian Synod. It served as the Columbia Theological Seminary. During the war, the seminary rented dormitory space to Confederate refugees. Hospital supplies were stored in the institution’s chapel. While the city was burning, many Columbians fled to the school’s yard to escape the fire.
