Memoriale ai Marinai (1923)
Il Monumento ai caduti eretto sul culmine della Rocca è sempre
stato considerato un doveroso omaggio ai marinai della Prima
Guerra Mondiale; ma v’è anche concordanza di opinioni sul fatto
che esso sia pure la causa ultima (dopo le distruzioni cinquecentesche
arrecate dalla soldataglia svizzera che aveva invaso il
Verbano spingendosi sino ad Angera) della illeggibilità, sul terreno,
dei pochi resti della rocca di Travaglia risparmiati dal tempo e
dall’uomo.
Pesante in particolar modo risultano le perdite dei manufatti
murari relativi al cosiddetto “Pian del Brügh”, sito di un
insediamento abitativo di cui la parte più spostata verso lago è
stata man mano distrutta dal progredire del fronte di escavazione
che provvedeva la materia prima alle sottostanti fornaci di calcare,
sinché funzionarono; altrettanto pesante è la perdita di quanto non
sia la pura e semplice fondazione della chiesetta medievale di san
Celso, sita ad un livello intermedio tra il culmine della rocca (zona
del dongione) e il Pian del Brügh.

Memorial to the Sailors (1923)
The War Memorial erected on the top of the Rock is always
was considered a fitting tribute to the sailors of the First
World War; but there is also concordance of views on whether
that it is also the ultimate cause (after the destruction sixteenth
caused thereby by Swiss soldiery who had invaded
Verbano pushing until Angera) of illegibility, on the ground,
the few remains of the fortress of Travaglia spared by time and
man.
