Geocache Description:

Nano near a statue. BYOP.

A Long Valley landmark, the Liberty Eagle was commissioned by Washington Township in 1999, carved by Harry Robinson of Bernardsville from the dying Liberty Tree. The name Bert may have come from a passer-by only being able to see the letters "BERT" from "LIBERTY EAGLE" carved at the bottom.  In 2010, a tractor-trailer scraped the base, which led to its becoming infested with termites and powder-post beetles. Repairs were made by Kriss Olsen after this accident, as well as after another similar one in 2014.

A lot of work and attention is often focussed on this area; it is not necessary to mess with either Bert himself or any landscaping.  This might even be a terrain 1 but for its dangerous location at a busy intersection with no easy, nearby parking.

There was another cache here previously, "before my time." It has been archived, but this spot is still worthy of attention.

Congrats to evezofiu2 on being FTF!
