The village takes its name from Thurlestone Rock, the so-called "thirled stone", an arch-shaped rock formation just offshore in Thurlestone Bay.
The village's All Saints church is built of the dark grey local slate. The chancel is early 13th century; the remainder of the church 15th and 16th century. As you approach the porch from the Lych Gate you will see the porch, the flat roof was often used as a hiding place for smugglers, holding up to 50 barrels of French brandy, the Rector's of course had no idea, apparently. Take a wander around the church and spot the John's Angels, carved angels with shields and musical instruments, high up in the roof beams.
Now look up at the church from the Lych Gate, how many large arch windows + 2 = A
Once at the church porch take the gravel path to the left in order to find the necessary clues.
