Tian-xiang is one of our favorite places in Taiwan. It has the distinction of being on the west end of the gorgeous Taroko Gorge, a natural wonder worth visiting often. The main road that takes off east from Tian-xiang (#8) is called the Central Cross-Island Highway and this road takes you up into and over the mountains to the eastern plain of Taiwan. If you don't have a car, you get to Tian-xiang by taking the train from anywhere in Taiwan to the city of Hualien (花蓮) and then renting a motor scooter, hiring a taxi, or riding a bus through Taroko Gorge up to Tian-xiang. Take a deep breath of the fresh mountain air.
