The Henri-Chapelle American Cemetary is the largest American military cemetary in Belgium.
7992 war dead of the United States of America from World War II rest here. Most died in the repulse of
the German counteroffensive in the Ardennes during the winter of 1944-1945, or during the advance into Germany. Additionally, the names of 450 Americans whose remains were never recovered or not identified are inscribed on the colonnades, between the chapel and museum. A bronze rosette marks the names of those who were subsequently found. 89 headstones mark the graves of 94 "unknowns".
The construction and care of this 57-acre cemetary and memorial are the responsibility of the American Battle Monuments Commission, an agency of the United States government. Use of the land was granted,
in perpetuity, by the people of Belgium.

Le Cimetière Américain de Henri-Chapelle est le plus grand cimetière militaire américain de Belgique.
Ici reposent les corps de 7992 victimes de guerre des Etats-Unis d'Amérique tombées au cours de la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale. La plupart trouvèrent la mort lors de la contre-offensive des Allemands pendant l'hiver 1944-45, ou durant durant l'avance en Allemagne. De plus, les noms de 450 Américains dont les corps ne furent pas retrouvés ou identifiés sont inscrits sur les colonnades entre la chapelle et le musée. Une rosette en bronze est apposée près des noms des disparus dont les corps furent retrouvés ultérieurement. Les dépouilles mortelles de 94 soldats inconnus reposent dans 89 tombes.
La construction et l'entretien de cette nécropole d'une superficie de plus de 23 hectares sont sous la responsabilité de la Commission des Monuments de Guerre Américains, une agence gouvernementale des Etats-Unis. La libre disposition du terrain a été gracieusement concédée, à perpétuité, par le peuple belge.

De Amerikaanse Begraaflplaats van Henri-Chapelle is het grootste Amerikaanse militaire begraafplaats in België. Hier rusten 7992 Amerikaanse slachtoffers van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De meesten gaven hun leven in een poging het Duitse tegenoffensief in de Ardennen gedurende de winter van 1944-1945 te stoppen. Anderen sneuvelden tijdens de opmars in Duitsland. De namen van 450 Amerikaanse soldaten wier lichnamen nooit gevonden of niet geidentificeerd werden, staan in de pilaren tussen de kapel en het museum gebeiteld. Een bronzen rozet markeert de namen van hen die naderhand zijn teruggevonden. Verder merkeren 89 grafstenen de graven van 94 onbekende soldaten.
De American Battle Monuments Commission, een Amerikaanse overheidsinstelling, is verantwoordelijk voor de verwezenlijking en het onderhoud van deze 23 hectaren groote begraafplaats en het gedenkteken. Uit eerbied en dankbaarheid voor de gevallenen nam het Belgische volk de grond in eigendom en stond hem voor eeuwigdurend gebruik af aan de Verenigde Staaten.
