Geocache Description:

A short stroll down Queen Street, picking up clues and exploring Filey's past.

Have you seen the Adventure Lab in Filey? Available via phone app

The published coordinates take you to Filey’s Museum. This hidden gem was originally a farm house which served the local community.  From this point if you look around you may get a good view of the church in the gap between the houses. Queen Street was the centre of Filey up until the 1850s when the more modern Crescent was developed and shops and businesses set up in ‘new Filey’. Opposite the museum there used to be  a row of small cottages, unfortunately these were demolished in the 1960s and the current housing was built.

What is the date above the museum door?  1A96

As you walk towards the sea you will pass a pub and come to a road junction. Here there are 2 things to look for.

You will see a plaque on the wall remembering a butcher’s shop which was the last shop to remain in this street

It opened in 189C

You will see a post box set into the wall on a new development

Is it Victorian? D = 0

Is it Georgian? D = 1

Is it Elizabethan? D = 2

The council offices are still located in Queen Street

Their phone number is 01723 51B4E8

This end of the street still retains a lot of the features of Filey as a small self-sufficient, tight knit fishing community. If you look between the houses you may see yards and extensions to the back where large extended families lived. They worked hard and played hard, you are going to pass 2 more pubs

There is another modern house to look at, no 71.

It was built in 19(F+1)8

As you look around you will see many of the houses have stained glass windows of fishing boats. No 97 used to be the Coastguard house, what an excellent view of the sea!

At the seaward end of the street you will see 2 unusual street lights. These were a beacon for returning fishermen. The seats at the end of the street may be full if you visit in summer, but they are a good place to admire the view and check the final coordinates

You will find the cache at N 54 12.ABC  W000 17. DEF

Unfortunately the gardens in front of you are closed for Health and Safety reasons, but there is access to the beach if you so wish by turning either left or right and going down the steps.
