Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of 9 caches on a circular route which starts and finishes in Simister.  The route is approximately 5.2 km and will take about 1 hr 40 mins.

The unusual Grade II listed St George's Church, on Nutt Lane, was designed by R. Basnett Preston in a combination of Romanesque and vernacular revival styles. A daughter church of St Margaret's, Prestwich, it was built during the First World War and opened on October 14 1915.[2][3] The Lady Wilton Hall, on Simister Lane, was built in 1850 at the sole expense of the Earl and Countess of Wilton and housed the village school until the 1970s. Used for worship in the village prior to the construction of the church, as well as for the Sunday School, it continues to function as the church hall and is owned by the Parochial Church Council of St Margaret's. Elderly family members who lived in this area tell us that when the church was first opened there were no seats and that villagers carried chairs from the school to the church on Sundays. We wanted to put a cache here as it was the church where we were married back in 1983 in the village where my wife Jill grew up and attended the school in Lady Wilton Hall. We had a guard of honour by our cub scouts as we left the church. The original cache was not too dissimilar to something thrown on the brides dress during photo's taken on the lawn after the ceremony although cache has since been changed after several losses and now is a magnetic. There is no need to enter the church grounds to find the cache.
