Crowned with a plastic pennant, Hideous House is one of the architectural delights of Kowloon. The vaulted roof is reminiscent of the Romanesque crypts of northern Spain. The turret has all the charm of a Venetian campanile. The tastefully-coloured panelling evokes a bygone age when jousting was a legitimate hobby and glass had not yet been invented. It is scandalous that the architect has not yet received a Pritzker.
Sadly, Hideous House has been earmarked for redevelopment; an outrage in my opinion. It ought to be preserved as a listed heritage building, for there is surely nothing quite like it anywhere in the SAR.
The original function of this marvel of urban design remains a mystery to me, however my theory was that it was an asylum for troubled circus clowns which closed due to elevated failure rates in the treatments offered. Who needs windows, anyway?
