This Cache Has Been Placed At The Heron Pond Wetlands Trail Head.
The Heron Pond Wetlands Trail is 1.8 miles long with a mostly bark walking surface. This is a hiking only trail that loops around Heron Pond's 42 acres of wetlands. The trail is closed from October 15th thru April 15th to protect the migrating birds.
Herons and egrets are prevalent to the marshlands but shore birds, ducks and geese are the most plentiful. Some mink, beaver and other critters make may quick appearances.
Water levels are consistent as the Corps of Engineers monitors drainage and lowers the water in the spring. This enables moist soil vegetation to grow and exposes mud flats. The flats contain crustaceans and invertebrate creatures that shorebirds feast on. During the fall and winter, the Corps will fill the pond to create a resting and feeding area for waterfowl.
The area also features prairie restoration – there is no shade on the trail.
