Muskegon Lighthouse
The narrow strip of water that connects Muskegon Lake to Lake Michigan is protected by two concrete walls Muskegon South Breakwater Light stretching out into the water. Between the two breakwaters the Muskegon South Pier Light sits on a short pier on the south side of the channel mouth. The first light, a wooden structure, was built in 1851 on the keepers dwelling. In 1871, Muskegon South Breakwater Light was rebuilt as a square steel-sided structure and remained with the keepers dwelling. When it was decommissioned in 1903, it was moved Muskegon South Pier Light to the inner end of the south pier. Standing on the breakwaters today are two smaller lights. The present day Muskegon South Pier Light was built in 1903. The light is a conical cast iron-sided tower painted fire-engine red for ease of recognition during the daytime. On top of the tower is a parapet and lantern room. The lantern room houses the original fourth order Fresnel lens.
