Forest of Terror Traditional Cache

Located within Cairn Wood. Cache is located approximately a 15 minute (uphill) walk from the main car park.

Cairn Wood is a 40 hectare woodland area with several paths running through it. Ample free parking is available at the entrance to the wood which is located along the back road leading from Church Road towards Dundonald, and is signposted near Ballysallagh Road.

It is a haven of serenity, with excellent views towards Bangor and far beyond. Cairn Wood is a prime location for rambling and orienteering and can be quite busy at times.

Rising to an altitude of 200m, Cairn Wood was once an outlier of the Clandeboye Estate and is important locally not only for its conservation value but also as a landscape feature in North Down.

The tree cover in the reserve is mainly beech, some oak, alder and birch many of which are of scrub character. A few conifers occur, mostly scots pine. Open areas are predominantly grass/rush complex with bramble and at the highest elevations, vaccinium heath comes in.

There is a wide range of small song birds and many of the more common raptors frequent the area. Red squirrels are also resident in the forest and may be seen in the wooded areas.
