One of a series of ten church micros placed in Chesham. This is the parish church and the oldest one in town. My source for its history records that Chesham was famous for boots, beer, brushes and Baptists. A stone cross in the churchyard commemorates the burning at the stake of Thomas Harding in 1532 who dared to read the bible in English. Take care at GZ as the river Chess is nearby.
There has been a church on this site since Normand times and until the Reformation the church was served by two vicars because of competition between two lords of the manor, Chesham Higham and Chesham Bury.
Unlike many Buckinghamshire churches the tower is in the centre of the church. It is made of wood and covered with lead. During the seventeenth century an increasing population led to the building of galleries in the north and south aisles and west end but these were removed during a restoration by George Gilbert Scott who also restored St Mary Magdalene at Latimer and designed the red phone box. Its current appearance is a result of a further restoration in 1999 when a dias was built under the tower separating the nave from the chancel, under floor heating installed and a new west gallery built. The pews were replaced by chairs.
