A Wherigo cache requires a Wherigo player (available on certain Garmin GPS units and as apps available for iPhone, Android, or pocket PC devices) and a "cartridge" which has been programmed for the specific cache. You can download the cartridge for this cache from the "Related Web Page" link above.
This Wherigo is a puzzle that can be solved in the field but a pencil and paper may be helpful. After you have solved this puzzle you will be rewarded with coordinates to a cache. This cache will be within 1 mile of the starting coordinates. This Wherigo is designed to work in many different states and it is very important that you select New Mexico when you first start playing. Instructions are in the cartridge under TASKS in the main screen.
As mentioned above, this cartridge may be played for geocaches in several states. The cartridge itself was written by Rusty O Junk, to whom my thanks are expressed. As the cartridge starts you choose from a list of states with wherigo geocaches included in the cartridge. Upon completion of the puzzle you will be given the GC number and coordinates for the associated geocache in that state and none other. For another state you may restart and play the cartridge again. Remember learning about "magic squares" when you were in school? I do. In case you don't remember (or never heard of them), a normal magic square is an n x n grid with the consecutive integers 1 through n2 placed in each grid square in such a way that each row, each column, and both diagonals all add up to [n(n2+1)/2]. For more on magic squares, check out Wikipedia
In this Wherigo n is equal to 3, and you are placed in the middle of this 3 x 3 grid with an inventory of 7 integers. The other two integers have already been placed in the grid. Your job is walk around the grid and place your seven integers in the other grid squares so that the conditions of the magic square are satisfied. When you successfully complete the puzzle, you will be given the coordinates of the physical cache.
The cache itself is located in the Bernalillo County's Carlito Springs Open Space. Free parking is available.
