Boy Scouts and the Coastal Georgia Council

Lord Baden Powell is credited with being the father of the scouting movement. Returning from the Boer War a hero in 1900, he tackled social problems in his homeland of England and introduced a radical new education concept for industrial urban youth. In 1907 he tried out his concept by taking a group of London boys to a small island on the English Channel and taught them how to build shelter, gather food, and do everything they needed to be a self-sufficient community. This “Brownsea Island” experiment is seen as the first official Boy Scouts campout.

In 1908, Lord Baden Powell published the book, “Scouting for Boys” which detailed the skills he had learned as a military scout. Boy Scouts was seen as a unique way of teaching – young people became their own professors by learning through nature and in the company of other young people. The result was that scouting improved education and national character. And, it was fun!

Since the Brownsea Island experiment, scouting has spread around the world and was incorporated in the United Sates in 1910 as the Boy Scouts of America and officially chartered by Congress in 1916. Locally, the Coastal Empire Council was founded in 1923, initially as the Chatham County Council, and has since served over 110,000 youth. In recognition of their efforts, House Resolution 124 was passed in 2002 to formally commend the Coastal Empire Council for their continued service to the youth of Savannah area and its surrounding communities, and invite them to appear before the Georgia House of Representatives.
