I thought I would bring you to another heritage spot in Muswellbrook to the Fitzgerald \ Olympic Park gates.
These gates were built it April 1914 in memory of Richard T. Keys, noted local and descendant of an area pioneer family, for recognising his service to the community, the common name of the gates, identified with the name of the park with they would originally have been associated.
The gates are always open and lead into the Olympic Park and also allow access to the Olympic Park tennis Cub and Ron King Velodrome.
There’s a pretty remarkable story behind the name of this particular velodrome. Ron King was a prominent Muswellbrook cyclist and owner of the local bike shop on Market Street for many years. Locals remember he was a key figure in helping to save the velodrome that now bears his name when it was slated to make way for a sports ground. At the age of 74 King was recognised for his efforts in the community with the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch through his beloved Muswellbrook on 31 August 2000. He completed his 500 metre leg, passed on the flame, and promptly died from a heart attack just minutes later.
This cache is hidden close to the gate. This cache is a concealed metal pipe/tube with log book, pen and space for small trinkets.
