Kinsale Gift Houses Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Eclectic Penguin: I'm surprised this one lasted as long as it did - while I placed it in a slightly hidden location, it was always in plain sight whenever I passed by and checked.

I no longer live nearby so I'm archiving this.

Geocache Description:

This cache should be simple to find, one of a number of caches placed in the area that highlight the history and famous people of Kinsale. The cache is a concealed bison tube. There is ample parking nearby and the cache should easily be wheelchair accessible.

The alms houses (known locally as The Gift Houses) that can be seen here were built by Sir Robert Southwell in 1682, who at the time was the Principal Secretary of State for Ireland, one of the most famous and powerful men of his time. He had a special interest in the welfare of the poor and the destitute of the area and the houses were built as homes for 8 elderly men and women and a family to look after them.

Just to the other side of the car park is Kinsale's Municipal Hall, rebuilt in 1938 after it had been burned out during the civil war in 1922. Until then it was a social centre for British officers stationed in Kinsale. Charles Wesley preached there in 1785 on a visit to Kinsale.

The cache should be relatively straightforward to find. Please re-hide carefully after signing, as even a slight incorrect replacement may make it quite visible and vulnerable.
