Geocache Description:

Redmond rain may be cleaned in a bioretention cell. Redmond's Public Works staff are hard at work making sure these engineered rain gardens really work. View the bioretention cell from outside the fence; enjoy the art; earn a smiley!

Redmond Works!

I was surprised to see the Redmond Works Cache archived after ten years. The original cache celebrated the 1998 Art installation Works by Actual Size Artworks (Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades). This art celebrates the hard work of the men and women who keep Redmond streets, utilities, parks, fire trucks and police cars working every day. Redmond's workers serve our community every day and are recognized leaders in the region.

Does Bioretention Work?

You may not know that Redmond is leading the region in the development of regional standards for engineered rain gardens, also known as bioretention cells. In 2012, Redmond began monitoring recently installed bioretention on 185th Avenue to confirm that those facilities will remove pollutants from stormwater so it can be infiltrated into the ground without compromising our drinking water aquifer. Just a few dozen feet east of GZ, you will see a sign noting the bioretention cell behind the fence that is treating water at the Maintenance Operations Center.

Parking is at a premium in this neighborhood, and places you should not park are signed clearly. The City's Maintenance Center has free public parking at the posted parking coordinates, 160 feet from GZ. Due to the premium of parking, you might be asked about it if someone sees you park and then walk off site during business hours. If that happens, just tell them you want to admire the art, or the bioretention cell. If you have an electric vehicle, you can top off the tank while you visit. The parking lot will be empty before 6 AM, after 4 PM, weekends, and holidays. There are usually a few open spots during business hours.
