The R100 Airship was built at Howden as part of a government policy to reduce journey times to distant destinations.
It was designed by Barnes Wallis and Nevil Shute Norway and took three years to construct.
The R100 was designed to carry 100 passengers and 38 crew and had a range of 5,000 miles (8,000 km).
It flew to Canada and back in July/August of 1930 taking 79 hours outward and 57 hours to return.
It's six Rolls-Royce engines produced 4,200 h.p. giving a maximum speed of 81 m.p.h.
After the tragic loss of the rival R101 the airship programme was abandoned.
The R100 was stored and later dismantled.
The plaques along Market Place mark it's length and are a permanent memorial to Howden's part in aviation history.

Howden virtual tour
Many years ago when I had a shop in Howden I created an online virtual tour of the town using html code and photos. Building this Wherigo cartridge has been a trip down memory lane, a similar experience using different technology. We hope you enjoy your visit.
"this cartridge can be played on Wherigo compatible GPS units and there are various phone apps available too"
