Even after all the rubbish and recycling that was cleared away at last year's Clean Up Australia Day CITO event, Jeannie and Gilligan are still quite concerned about the atrocious condition of their homes.
Please help us (again!) to clean up Narrabeen Lake on Clean Up Australia Day 2015.
Please Note
This event is boat/swimming access ONLY as we'll be cleaning up around the islands of Narrabeen Lake.
What is CITO?
CITO stands for Cache in Trash Out. From the Geocaching web site:
Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving parks and other cache-friendly places. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!
What's happening?
Date:
Sunday 1 March 2015
Meeting Time:
8:30am to pick up garbage bags and coordinate clean up areas.
Meeting Place:
Jamieson Park, Narrabeen at the Meet and Greet coordinates to pick up garbage bags and let us know you're here. At this time you will also need to sign the Clean Up Australia Day registration form.
Clean-up Areas:
Gilligan's Island, Jeannie's Island and any water-access-only places en route that need cleaning up.
Clean-up Time:
Launch boats or start swimming by or before 9:00am and aim to return for the Meet and Greet at Jamieson Park around 12:00 - earlier or later, depending on how much rubbish there is!
Meet and Greet:
After the clean up, we plan to meet back up at Jamieson Reserve for lunch and a Meet and Greet. The Log Book will be available to sign for those who participated in the CITO event and a group photo will be taken.
What to bring:
- gloves
- appropriate clothing for swimming or kayaking
- a kayak or other floating device, unless you plan to swim
- hat
- sunscreen
- food, drinks, etc. if you plan to stay for lunch and the Meet and Greet after the clean up. There are restaurants along Pittwater Road in Narrabeen, about a 5 minute drive, where you can pick some lunch up too.
Important Note for Swimmers:
You will need to coordinate your clean up with someone on a boat so that they can bring a garbage bag for you and take any full bags back to shore!
Parking
Jamieson Park
Parking is Pay & Display for vehicles without a Warringah Council parking sticker. Rates are $4 per hour or $16 per day weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Toilets are located at this reserve. Great place to launch a boat from but too far to swim to the islands!
Wimbledon Avenue
Free parking appears to be available here. Easy to launch a boat and good swimming access to Gilligan's Island.
Wellington Street Parking
Signs say 3HR Parking Monday-Friday and 2 HR parking on Saturdays. We're thinking this means Sundays should be unlimited free parking.
Berry Reserve
Carpark access is from Pittwater Road and provides 3 hour parking Mon-Fri and 2 hour parking on Saturdays. There's no mention of Sundays, so we're assuming it's unlimited. Toilets are located at this reserve. Probably possible to launch a boat but not ideal.
Hate paying for parking?
If you don't have a Warringah Council parking sticker and plan to park at one of the other parking areas, just swing by Jamieson Park on your way to pick up garbage bag(s) and let us know you're participating in the event. If you plan to park at one of the free parking areas and kayak/boat to the Meet and Greet after the clean-up, you can leave your lunch and other gear in our geomobile.
Public Transport:
This is not an ideal way to get to Jamieson Park, as it would require walking from Pittwater Road. Also, it's hard to take a kayak on a bus, so your day would involve a lot of walking and swimming!
Want to hire a floating device?\
It's probably a bit expensive, but kayaks, stand up paddle boards, canoes, pedal boats and more can be hired on the lake from either ProKayaks or Jamieson Park Paddle
Important:
If you plan to join us, please post a Will Attend log and add this event to your watchlist so you receive any announcements.
In your log, please let us know whether you plan to swim or boat and whether you have a preference of which island to clean up.
