Geocache Description:

The Stone Circle is a prehistoric monument located in the Falkland Islands, about 2 miles (3 km) west of Stanley along the Darwin Road. One of the most famous sites in the Falkland Islands, the circle is the remains of a ring of stones set within earthworks. The cache is hidden within the stone circle, due to its size it only contains a log sheet and you will need to bring your own pen.

Many aspects of the circle remain subject to debate and a number of myths surround the stones. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first stones were laid between 2400 and 2200 BC, whilst another theory suggests that stones may have been laid at the site as early as 3000 BC.

Over the years, various authors have suggested that supernatural or anachronistic methods were used in its constructing, usually asserting that the stones were impossible to move otherwise. However, conventional techniques, using Neolithic technology as basic as shear legs, have been demonstrably effective at moving and placing stones of a similar size.

Proposed functions for the site include usage as an astronomical observatory or as a religious site. From the 16th Century its primary use was for burning witches (Some of the stakes still remain to this day!) Witch burning was put to an end when in 1982 during the Argentine invasion the surrounding area was mined. In 2013 the area was cleared of mines and is now a favorite spot for picnics.
