(Original description follows): This cache celebrates the 2014 college football national championship by our alma mater, THE Ohio State University. Of course, it is located in an area populated by California Buckeyes. If you happen to see a few buckeyes lying on the ground, don't they remind you of our mascot?
It's a funny coincidence that both California and Ohio have their versions of buckeyes - - especially since the Buckeye is the state tree in Ohio. Having lived in both places, and finding buckeyes on our hikes and while geocaching, we have been trying to find a good spot to hide a cache that reflects the tie. After a couple tries (and getting dinged by hidden waypoints and secret caches), we hope this cache finds its home. This is especially true this week, after our alma mater pulled off its third upset in a row, with its third-string quarterback, to win the collegiate football national championship. 2014 has been a sports good season for us, with the Giants and Buckeyes winning it all.
We almost literally stumbled on this spot after taking a detour. A herd of cows was straddling the Volvon Trail on our way back from a great lunch while out the Stone Corral Trail. The cache is on the Valley View Trail, and we hid it and then continued on by way of the Manzanita Trail. If you go on the Manzanita Trail, it can be a bit challenging with its ups and downs, but you will see beautiful manzanitas, with melted-wax cinnamon-colored bark. The cache celebrates the events of the last week. The cache itself is a cammo-taped old nut jar - - which makes sense since the buckeye is a nut of sorts as well.
FEBRUARY 2016 UPDATE: we returned to the site recently and updated the coordinates. Even using Gaia, the coordinates were hard to get accurately. We took several measurements, though, and used Google Earth to pinpoint as well as possible, so the coordinates now should be within 20 feet or so . . . the cache is just on the uphill side of the trail, and should be easy to find. We put a bug in it for starters, too. If you get better coordinates when you are out there, let us know!
