THE BAY IS DANGEROUS (SANDS MOVING AND TIDE)
L'ilot présente une forme elliptique d'un pourtour de 1200m. Sa superficie est d'environ 4 ha. Son point culminant est le Pic de la Folie à 45m.
Le rocher de Tombelaine est formé de granite, roche claire constituée essentiellement de quartz, feldspath potassique et de mica. A Tombelaine et au mont Saint Michel, le mica blanc est très caractéristique. Le granite a été fortement fissuré et taillé par des forces tectoniques, particulièrement à la fin de l'ère primaire au Mont Saint Michel et à Tombelaine. Ces fissures sont remplies de quartz blanc.
Origine du granite
Toute la région est occupée par des schistes et de grès fortement plissés juste avant le début de l'ère primaire. Rapidement après deux phases de montée granitique sont injectées dans ses schistes. La première donne les massifs granitiques de Carolles- Vire, la seconde, plus modeste donne les granites à mica blanc de Tombelaine, Mont Dol et Mont Saint Michel. Par la suite l'érosion différentielle plus active sur les schistes permettra à tous ces granites de rester en relief. Les sables recouvrirent la baie, il y a quelques milliers d'années seulement.
