Geocache Description:

Moulting Lagoon Game Reserve is a 900 sq km internationally recognised wetland adjacent to the Coles Bay Road. It is an important breeding ground for various waterfowl and wetland birds, and also a destination for migratory birds.

Moulting Lagoon is one of 10 wetlands in Tasmania listed in 1982 under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands. It supports over 1% of the world populations of Black Swans and Pied Oystercatchers & the largest flock of Common Greenshanks in Tasmania. Almost 100 species of birds are listed on the official bird checklist at http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/indeX.aspX?base=5620.

The short access track off the Coles Bay Road leads to a carpark where an information board provides details on the area. A short walking track leads to the foreshore of the lagoon. The name Moulting Lagoon comes from black swans shedding their flight feathers. These can often be seen piled up along the shoreline. The lagoon can also be accessed from several other spots including Point Meredith at the end of River & Rocks Road.
