Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of the Taylor County Geotrail, a series of 11 geocaches launched in the Grafton area during Fall 2015.

Grafton City Park sits in the shadow of Tygart Dam, one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' first flood control projects. The dam was built starting in 1934 to help control floods and to ensure a water supply for the Monongahela River navigation system.

Tygart Dam Model

Even more than 80 years after its construction, some of Tygart Dam's Art Deco flourishes remain. The dam was designed by the Corps of Engineers and Paul Philippe Cret, a French-born architect whose other works include Cincinnati Union Terminal, the Eternal Light Peace Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park, and streamlining for 1930s passenger trains.

Today, Grafton City Park offers camping, picnic, and river recreation opportunities. The park features a recently restored working model of Tygart Dam.
