The current library building dates from 1981 and is the latest in a series of facilities that has served Taylor County since 1923. The current building was built with federal and state grants plus donations from locals and many area and regional foundations.
Just down Walnut Street from the library is Grafton National Cemetery. This small 3-acre cemetery was established in 1867 to provide a burial site for Union soldiers who died in West Virginia during the Civil War. The cemetery has the grave of Thornsbury Bailey Brown (1829-May 22, 1861), who is believed to be the first Union soldier killed by a Confederate soldier. Brown was killed in the area known on Fetterman on what is now the west side of Grafton.
